01 — about

AI Artist & DATAsculptor

Dariusz Gross works between sculpture and machine learning. Trained at the academies of Kraków, Gdańsk and Düsseldorf, he coined datasculpting as practice: form carved from data rather than stone. Recent research develops Active Absence and Datasculptor's Razor — methods that treat archival voids and missing referents as evidence, not errors to fill.

01

Datasculpting

The first act of machine learning as sculpture. Models as chisels; weights as grain. Data is the silent stone.

02

Active Absence

Epistemological method: study voids, archival silences and erased referents instead of rushing to restore them.

03

Artistic immortality

Encode a lifetime of gesture so creativity continues beyond the body — not as copy, as new work.

02 — artistic research

Active Absence & Datasculptor's Razor

Recent work inverts the impulse to generate more. Gross maps voids — cultural, archival, filial — and builds methods that treat missingness as evidence.

Datasculptor's Razor

Active Absence as epistemological method in artistic research — inverting classical parsimony so absence is generative evidence.

Artificial intelligence is not the Holy Grail, but another tool. Like my father's chisel.

Dariusz Gross

I want to ensure my father's immortality… so that his lack of a body will not interfere with his continued creativity.

Should absence be restored, or studied?

Leschnitz Laboratory of Absence

His knowledge got lost along with his death. I intend to retrieve it and keep it alive — encoded in a single mathematical equation.

Artistic immortality beyond the body

After Siegfried Gross died, his son set out to retrieve what death erased: a lifetime of sculptural knowledge. Machine learning becomes the medium of filial duty — training on Madonnas, angels and workshop motion so new works can still emerge after the father.

“I will just place a tool in its hand. And I will leave it to do what it wants with it, just as my father did with me.”

01

Archive the gesture

Photographs, photogrammetry, workshop video and drawings from Siegfried Gross’s sixty-year sacral practice.

02

Encode the knowledge

Models learn the grain of angels and Madonnas — not as copies, as a mathematical function of style.

03

Place the chisel

Robotics, VR and reinforcement learning receive the tool. The son enables creation; he does not decide form.
